Southampton Arts Center hosts events throughout the year. Whimsy, its summer benefit, drew ticket holders to 25 Jobs Lane on June 27. The Architecture + Design Tour followed on July 18. SummerFest, the arts center's annual gala, landed on August 22, and the Fall Benefit at the Maidstone Club is booked for September 24.
In October, the arts center joins the Rogers Memorial Library, the Southampton African American Museum, and the Chamber of Commerce for Southamptonfest. This year it's the 13th one the village has run.
The arts center runs its own benefit track. The Cultural Center runs its own exhibition schedule. The library runs its own donor events.
Southamptonfest brings several organizations together on one program. It's produced by the Southampton Rotary Club, not by any single cultural institution. The evening of October 3, the Rotary Club's kickoff party moves to the Southampton Cultural Center this year. In past editions that same kickoff party has been hosted at Southampton Arts Center instead, so the venue itself shifts from year to year even as the format stays put: a paid cocktail evening that functions as the festival's only ticketed piece.
Everything after that is free.
October 4 is described by the village's own release as a full day of art, design, culture and family activity spread across the village, not concentrated at one address. The fixtures that keep it recognizable year to year include a Chowder Contest that draws entries from local restaurants and caterers, sheep shearing demonstrations paired with a petting zoo, a village-wide Art & Design Walk that treats Southampton's galleries as one connected route rather than separate stops, sidewalk sales from village merchants, and live music set up in Agawam Park. The Southampton African American Museum and the Southampton Chamber of Commerce are both listed among this year's participating partners.
Past editions have layered in more texture on top of that base. Hampton Flea & Vintage has curated a pop-up market during the weekend in prior years, and Jester Jim's balloon-animal act, a longtime crowd favorite, has been sponsored by the Friends of the Rogers Memorial Library. Whether every one of those specific acts returns in identical form this October is the kind of detail that shifts year to year.
There's a quieter piece of timing worth knowing if you've been following the arts center's summer program. Presence: The Photography Collection of Judy Glickman Lauder, the exhibit that's held the main galleries at 25 Jobs Lane since late July, closes its run today. By the time the Art & Design Walk brings foot traffic back through that building on October 4, whatever hangs in its place will be new to every resident walking through, not just visitors.
The village's Traffic Pilot program began September 14 and runs through October 30, which means the new left-turn restrictions onto Hill Street will be in effect for the entire Southamptonfest weekend. If your usual route into the village center involves a left onto Hill Street, plan an alternate approach before heading into the village rather than discovering the restriction mid-drive.
For anyone weighing whether to drive at all, the village center is genuinely walkable to it. The Southampton train station on the LIRR Montauk line sits a few short blocks from the arts center, and the Hampton Jitney's village stop is about five minutes from Main Street. Suffolk County Transit's Route 92 drops riders near Southampton Town Hall, an easy walk from the festival footprint. Given that Jobs Lane parking is metered on weekdays and the public lot behind the arts center fills fast during high-traffic events, arriving on foot or by rail removes one more variable from a day that's already routed through multiple venues.
The Rotary Club produces the weekend. The Cultural Center or the Arts Center hosts the opening party, depending on the year. The Friends of the Rogers Memorial Library sponsored a children's performer in past editions. The African American Museum and the Chamber of Commerce are listed as partners.
